NANDA DEVA PILGRIMAGE

NANDA DEVI RAJ JUT

The legend of this pilgrimage {yatra} is Nanda Devi, who is consort of Lord Shiva left her village and went to the Nanda Devi. When the yatra starts, heavy rain occurs as if the devi is crying. This yatra covers many villages and in the way, the Devi meets her sister in the Bhagwati village.

Legends has it that Nanda Devi visits her mother in the mountains in Bhado season (August- September) and her visit is cheered by one and all . It is said that a mythical four horned sheep is born every 12 years and the journey commences with the sheep and Doli and all sorts of gifts for Nanda Devi. Every 12 year this 280 kilometre and around 3 weeks Nanda Devi Raj Jat yatra starts from Nauti village and reaches Homkund.

When  the yatra reaches Homkund, the sheep is released along with all sort of gifts and nobody looks in its direction. The procession immediately heads back whilst seeking blessings from Nanda Devi and prays her to come back again soon

The 3 week 280Km mountain trek  is amongst the hardest Hindi pilgrimage and it ias considered the Kumb Mela of the Himalayas.

In Chamoli, the Nanda Devi Raj Jat is organized once in 12 years. The Jaat (meaning Yatra or pilgrimage) it  starts from Kansuwa village near Karnprayag and goes up to the heights of Roopkund and Homekund with a four horned sheep. After the havan – fire ceremony yagna is over, the sheep is freed

An annual Nanda Jaat is also celebrated. The Raj Jaat procession goes through villages, where there is a recognized Nanda Devi temple. At Koti, a night halt of the participants takes place where a night-long worship and celebrations take place.
